In last Sunday’s sermon by our own Dr. Jackie Marshall, we heard a message of hope and how we find hope through small acts of love. Jackie exemplifies how we thrive collectively as a church family. No matter what we face, God lights our path. Jackie gave us example after example of this from her own remarkable life.

The path can be daunting, especially as we face the recent hail, hurricanes, and heat of Houston. Some of us hadn’t finished cleaning up from the weather disaster of a few weeks ago, when along came Beryl, causing us to wonder, “Is there no end to this?”

Small acts of love are all around us. I feel them every day from my church family. I have learned over time to trust God and allow those who love me to support and encourage me when I really need it. I used to be that person who said, “I’m okay. I don’t need help,” even when I really did. You reached out anyway. You messaged me anyway. You called. You prayed. For that, I remain grateful.

Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable emotionally, especially in a time of crisis, can feel like we are releasing our personal power. And we are. When you let go, you let the stress of the moment go. When we trust God, we learn that faith can sustain us even in our darkest moments.

Matthew 6:25-34 says, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

In Dr. Jackie’s message last week, she reminded us that we are more than our church house and to keep dreaming about the possibilities that await us. She reminded us that we have the collective power to change lives and make a difference. We are disciples, first and foremost. Give that good news freely and create hope for others. What an amazing gift we have in the power to influence and change outcomes for those who need to hear about grace, mercy, and unconditional love!

I, too, want to be that person for you. I want to encourage and nourish you with hope for our future together. I am in love with our people and am grateful for all the times I’ve been nourished for more than 20 years as a member of Resurrection MCC. Tell me about your hopes and dreams, and let me help you find God’s light, that light that guides your path when you are least able to see it.

God bless you and keep you, and let God’s light shine upon you and give you peace.

Amen.
