Even When God is Silent Last Sunday, we observed the first Sunday of the Lenten season, a time for reflection, prayer, and fasting. In preparation for this season, we typically begin by wondering what we can give up as sacrifices. We give ourselves 40-day challenges and other tasks to do as offerings in preparation to remember Jesus’s death and resurrection. This season, as we practice acts of sacrifice, and continue to pray and fast, let us not forget to embrace reflection. On Sunday, Resurrection Choir sang “I Believe,” written by Mark Miller, which symbolizes strength during times of darkness. The actual lyrics originated as the written words of Jews who were in hiding during the Holocaust. What a statement to have the strength to still believe during your darkest hour! The song ends with, “I believe in God, even when God is silent…” The lyrics of this song should be a challenge to us to keep the hope and faith as we wait to hear from God. When we don’t hear from God, our tendency is to question what we are doing wrong. We grow impatient with ourselves and even with God. Have you considered that God’s silence is intentional? A time for reflection and silent contemplation? Sure, sacrificing and giving ourselves challenges during Lent are important, but finding time for reflection is also imperative to our spiritual growth. ● Seek the Lord: I, myself, am guilty of asking others for their opinions about my life. Before I make a move, I seek out advice on what my next steps should be. Let’s challenge ourselves to look to God for next steps. Truly, our help comes from The Lord. Look to the hills, not to the left nor to the right. ● Wait: Psalm 27:14 (KJV) tells us, “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.” What’s important to remember about this scripture is it instructs us to be of GOOD courage. We’re not waiting and doubting, waiting and leaning to our own understanding, not even waiting and whining. We are waiting and being of good courage. ● Obey: As we are reflecting, we should acknowledge that God has a plan for us. Not only does God have a plan for our lives, but God has the BEST plan. Following God’s direction and guidance will also be essential for spiritual growth. As you hear from God during this time, your obedience will signify your trust, faith, and dedication to your spiritual relationship with God. As we continue our journey through the season, let us not forget our purpose. Utilize this time of reflection to seek God. While we are seeking the Lord, we will wait and be of GOOD courage, and walk in the paths that are set for our lives. May God bless you. |
