Such a Big Miracle in such a Small Child

Above the entrances to our Reverend Vickey Gibbs Children’s Center classrooms hung adhesive signs that read, “Such a big miracle in such a small child.” I had purchased the signs at Christmastime as part of our decorations. After that Christmas, Vickey and I decided to leave the signs up because it reminded us that part of the miracle of Jesus is always present in our children. Over time, the signs began to fray, a flood necessitated renovations, and the signs are gone. Yet every Sunday as I enter those rooms, I look up as if in prayer and I remember. I believe.

On Sundays, those of us involved in Children’s Ministry go into classes prepared to teach the children of RMCC lessons about God and Jesus. Every Sunday we leave class having been taught by the children. To the adults, some lessons we learn are more simplistic than others. (The verdict is out on if Paw Patrol is more popular than Bluey; I’ll keep you posted.)

Then there are the lessons like Christmas and celebrating the birth of Jesus. You might think it difficult to help children learn about the birth of Jesus when Santa, mischievous elves, and hi-tech gadgets are all around. We have children of various ages, and I think they handle this seamlessly. Whether it be the pure imagination of the young ones or the growing experiences of the older children, they embrace that two things can be true and important.

When discussing Jesus’s birthday, we will hear stories of their birthday celebrations, are asked whether Jesus gets a party, and the list of questions and comments goes on. Children love to celebrate – all the time and everyone. We have jumped up and down for someone losing a tooth, having a birthday, and passing a class. We have danced when seeing a friend, for someone scoring in a game, and because we have Goldfish for a snack. Some celebrations are quiet, like a comfy place to rest, or the I’m here for you hug when someone is sad.

The children have shown they have the right idea. Year ‘round, they are the twinkle of the Christ child reminding us that time goes quickly, so everyone deserves to be seen, celebrated and comforted – often.
